Notes Marriages in the Counter Culture

John S. Kafka

Family Development Section, National Institute of Mental Health, Public Health Service, U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.

Robert G. Ryder

Section on Family Development, Child Research Branch, NIMH.

Impressionistic studies of "counter-culture" couples suggest (a) several varieties of a "return of the conventional," (b) a reduced role of sexuality, in the sense of its "demystification," (c) an attitude of approach to emotional tension, and (d) dependence on a psychology of plenty. Possible connections among these four kinds of phenomena are suggested.
